THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL DESTINY. 23.6″ x 23.6″. Mint condition with COA, signed from an edition of just 100 prints. This is an edition print based on my tondo painting series with my signature subject, Flowers. The original painting took about a year to make. The first step of the production process is to layout the flowers on the computer and select the colors with neurotic attention to details. Sometimes it only takes about a week to create a painting design in data, but once things get jammed in my head, it could take up to two to three years. For this work, this process took about a month. The actual process of painting involves making the circular panel, stretching the canvas, and preparing the surface with base coats, upon which the colors of each individual flower petal are painted with squeegee work using silkscreens. This is my original technique in which we layer the colors over and over again in order to create depth. This production method also is in line with my Superflat theory. That is, although the painting is compositionally flat and depthless, the sense of pictorial space is achieved through the colors and contrasts of the paint applied. This was the biggest challenge with this particular painting. We are now creating a print edition based on the original painting. I truly love prints and edition works. I was greatly influenced by Horst Janssens, the German draftsman and printmaker, whose work I first saw when I was nineteen. I believe his philosophy about prints is imprinted in me as well. From his modality, I learned to pay minute attention to the selection of paper stock, how the ink is applied, and the texture of the completed surface. And in 2001, on the occasion of my first museum exhibition in Japan, I started producing prints in earnest. There is the original painting, then comes the small edition print, followed by signed posters in edition of around 300, and then a larger edition with just serial numbers, and finally there are posters in unlimited number. Popular works multiply in this way and get into the hands of many people, in turn raising the values of the originals. Ones desire to possess is a mysterious thing: Some people really care about specific edition numbers and sometimes a particular edition of a print becomes very expensive in the secondary market. So its not necessarily the case of rarity equals value. This edition was also produced with such enthusiasm.
